CS373 Fall 2021: Albert C. Trevino

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Laredo, Texas for a majority of my childhood, but went to middle/high school in Eagle Pass, Texas.

What high school did you attend?

I attended Eagle Pass High School in Eagle Pass, Texas.

What was your favorite extracurricular activity in high school?

I really enjoyed band in high school. I play the snare drum and it was definitely my favorite memory from high school. It caused me to pursue band in college and it was the best choice I could’ve made.

Why did you come to UT?

I decided to come to UT because it has one of the best computer science schools in the nation. My family and I have also been HUGE Longhorn fans since I was born.

Why are you majoring in CS?

I’ve always loved computers. My parents always tell me than when we got our first computer way back in the day, I was inseparable from it. After taking a computer science class in high school, I knew that computer science is what I wanted to do, and is something I found passion for.

Why are you in this class?

I have heard great comments about this course and I really want to see what it has to offer. I also took Object Oriented Programming with Professor Downing last semester and I really enjoyed the class so I wanted to get another chance at doing well in one of his classes!

What are your expectations of this class?

I expect this class to be pretty challenging but I think it will be manageable. I’m pretty excited to get the feeling for what a real problem in the workforce feels like, and how it is to work with a team of people all working to learn and figure out the same goal.

How much Javascript/Python/SQL/Web programming do you already know?

I have used a fair amount of python in other classes so I would say that I’m pretty comfortable with the language but it is not my bread and butter. I have dabbled in SQL in the past for a database course, but it was so long ago, I’m definitely a bit rusty. As for web programming, I don’t know a whole lot about what that entails. I have used Havascript before in the past but not enough to feel super confident about my skills. I am excited to get extremely comfortable will all these tools.

How did you like the first lectures?

The first lectures were very informative and allowed me to understand the format of the class a bit better. Although there was not very much technical information about course material given yet, I still do really enjoy Professor Downing’s teaching style.

How did you feel about the cold calling?

I think cold calling is an efficient way of keeping every student engaged but I know that it does send some anxiety to people, myself included. Always wondering if I am going to be the next person called makes me a bit anxious but it’s a good way of keeping me engaged and ready for any questions.

What made you happy this week?

I turned 21 this week, so I was happy to spend the day with some friends and my parents. It was a good day and I’m excited to be able to finally go to Las Vegas and play some blackjack at some point.

What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?

My tip-of-the-week is to really get familiar with docker soon. I was able to be introduced and use docker in OOP and it was such a great tool to have at my disposal, especially during this remote learning environment. It allowed me to feel comfortable with any tool I needed on my own personal machine which was extremely efficient.
